Johnston Named OVC Freshman of the Week

Cornell Johnston has put together a very solid freshman campaign. By the end of the season he moved into 10th place in EIU history for single-season assists with 126. After good performances against Southeast Missouri and UT Martin last, Johnston came away with OVC Freshman of the Week honors. He averaged 13.5 points and 10 assists between the two games and also shot 9 of 11 from the field and 7 of 8 from beyond the arc.

Johnston ends the season with a hold on the OVC lead in 3-point percentage shooting a stellar 52.9% from deep. This high percentage came in large part from making 30 of his last 40 attempts from behind the arc. Johnston will no doubt be an important part of the Panthers’ game plan heading into the OVC Tournament next week.

Men’s Basketball Has Shot at Revenge on Thursday Night

After clinching their first winning season in five years on Sunday, the Eastern Illinois Panthers have a chance to even the season series against Murray State tonight. The Racers have already handed the Panthers a 15-point loss this season and are riding into tonight’s game with a 22-game winning streak and an unblemished OVC record (14-0). This game will be the last of the regular season for the Panthers. They will still have the OVC Tournament next week, however.

Having already clinched a spot in the OVC Tournament, tonight’s game only has bearings on where the Panthers will be seeded. They can be seeded as high as third and as low as sixth. The higher seed will insure a better draw in the tournament and give the Panthers a better chance to advance through the tournament into the finals.

Winter Blues Spell Bad News for Baseball

Eastern Illinois baseball has had to make a few tweaks to its schedule for the weekend and a little into next week. The weekend series that was originally supposed to be played at Kansas State has been cancelled due to winter weather. Instead, the Panthers will travel to Arkansas for a three-day series with the Razorbacks, who were originally slated to host a series against the California Golden Bears. Now the Golden Bears will be playing host to Kansas State instead.

After returning from the originally scheduled series at Kansas State, the Panthers were set to take on the Indiana State Sycamores on Tuesday. Well now it looks like that is not happening either. That game has also been cancelled thanks to the unfavorable snowy conditions in Indiana.
